Globally coordinated and promoted by The Ocean Project since 2002, World Ocean Day is an annual celebration on 8 June as well as a call for ocean and climate action throughout the year. Starting in 2008, the United Nations officially recognized World Ocean Day. This unique celebration brings together thousands of organizations and millions of individuals each year.
Youth play an increasingly important role in the development and growth of World Ocean Day in June, helping to raise the profile of the importance of our one shared ocean that connects us all. No matter where we live, we all depend on a healthy ocean to survive and thrive, and safeguarding the ocean will help us secure a stable climate into the future.
Celebrating World Ocean Day is an opportunity to not only celebrate the incredible life that inhabits the wider global ocean and seas, but to also raise awareness of and facilitate impactful discussions on the issues impacting the ocean. This year’s theme is to make people aware and inspire to protect at least 30% of our lands, waters, and ocean by 2030 (“30x30”).
RSCP Calicut joins the global celebration to make the people aware of the importance of Ocean and impact on our lives. There is a gallery titled ‘Hall of Ocean’ at its campus to educate one and all on ocean science. On June 8, 2023 this centre will organise special guided tours of its Ocean Gallery followed by a written quiz contest for the general public. There will be doubt clearance and kids’ activity session. A popular lecture titled ‘The Ocean of Life’ by Dr. Sreeraj from ZSI Calicut will be organised at 2:30 pm in the RSCPC auditorium.
Further, on June 12, 2023 (Monday) from 3 pm to 5 pm, an outdoor session titled ‘Treasures in the Beach’ will be organised at South Beach Kozhikode where people will be encouraged for collecting treasure of the ocean from the beach and identification of the same by experts.
