National Technology Day, celebrated on 11th May in India, highlights the achievements of tech giants, researchers, and engineers in technology in our country. The former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee established National Technology Day in 1999 to commemorate the Pokhran nuclear test.

India has witnessed explosive growth, thanks to the contribution of technological advancements. National Technology Day is the perfect occasion to acknowledge the

effort of scientists and engineers as growth drivers.

As a part of this event, Regional Science Centre and Planetarium Calicut (RSCPC) in association with IEEE Malabar Subsection and Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) Kozhikode Subcentre is organising a symposium on the occasion of 'National Technology Day 2023'on May 11, 2023 from 10 am onwards. The symposium is open to all interested people (Students, Teachers and General Public) with prior registration.

The symposium was inaugurated by Dr. Sabiq PV, Principal of KMCT College of Engineering. He stressed the role of young technocrats towards transforming our country from a developing to a developed nation. Dr. Bindima T, Chair IEEE Malabar Subsection stressed the improvements attained in technology enabled farming and agriculture in her felicitation address.

While delivering the invited talk on ‘Cyber security’, Dr. Arun Raj Kumar, Asst. prof. CSED, NIT Calicut said that we are all connected with communication devices and it seems to be a basic need for the sustained development of human race. Ignorance can lead us to cyber-attacks. Cyber security has a crucial role in day-to-day life. Further, he gave awareness about cyber security, cyber-attacks, LOBSHOTS, historical scenario of communication devices. He delivered an insightful talk about the requirements to differentiate between the genuine and malicious code, or data. He starts the session with a question that “name a place where an information could be passed from centuries to centuries and generation to generation without any damage to the original information”. Goals of cyber security and popular cyber security tools such as Nmap, Wireshark, snort etc were introduced briefly. As the session progress we come across the symmetric and asymmetric security algorithms, importance of multifactor authentication and the way it adds more security to the cyber world. He also unveiled different career opportunities in the discussed domain. To put it in a nut shell he concluded that we are living in an era where everything is a computer.

Shri Niyas Technical project manager, IOCOD infotech Pvt.Ltd. Calicut while delivering his talk on ‘Introduction to Chat GPT, mentioned that ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-training Transformer), is a natural language processing tool driven by AI technology that allows one to have human-like conversations and much more with the chatbot. He discussed about the pros and cons of AI and brief history of, unimodal ChatGPT and multimodal chatGPT. He also discussed the influence of ChatGPT in software industry. He gave a brief guidance to the GPT prompt and described the way to formulate a better prompt for the best result, its relevant to understand that prompt has a crucial role in using chatGPT. He also discussed about the limitations of ChatGPT in the emotional intelligence domain. Dominance and advantage of ChatGPT is also discussed briefly.

Shri Binoy Kumar Dubey, Curator and Project Coordinators of RSCP Calicut spoke on ‘Innovative project for science museums’.  He discussed about the digital interfaces in museum and the modern technologies used in this domain to engage the visitors such as augmented reality, digital flip books, gesture-based interaction. These modern technologies help developing curiosity among youth. This will nurture the scientific skill with creative exploration. This session gave description about some of the innovative science projects undertaken by science museums.

About 75 engineering college students participated in the symposium and with faculty members.
