In order to inculcate interest among the students in particular and public in general, Regional Science Centre (RSC) Calicut organised a number of webinars on various topics of scientific interest. One of them was ‘Combating Covid-19: The Kerala experience’.

It is not only making a national news. Globally it is being acclaimed that Kerala is doing very well in current unprecedented pandemic situation.

Despite having huge expat population, being the first state to have registered SARS-CoV-2 infection in India and despite some spread of infection earlier on, Kerala has now contained it to a large extent. It has registered low number of new infections, high rate of recovery and very low mortality. To lend the experts’ parlance, it has flattened the curve. Hence the world is talking about the success of Kerala Model. Some are preaching to adopt it.

But what is this Kerala Model? We asked the Doctors who are also part of medical policy making in Kerala. Our distinguished panel of Doctors are also are lead administrators and experts who are spearheading Kerala’s fight with the Covid-19 Outbreak.

There are generally two parts of such efforts – one administrative planning and implementation and the other is the S&T practice – what kind of clinical approach, what sort of technology support so on and so forth.

Dr. Ekbal, Member State Planning Board, expressed that success of Kerala is no miracle or instant remedy. It required prolonged honest efforts, building a humane society that cares for the lowest end of the economic chain, and creating a decentralized autonomous health infrastructure that can provide good health at low cost.

Dr. T. S. Anish, Public health consultant to KSDMA for COVID19 Crisis described 9 different strategies that a state can adopt without much cost implication and a multi-choice is the most efficient combat mechanism.

Dr. Suresh Kumar, founder Director, Institute of Palliative Medicine, Govt. Medical College, Kozhikode highlighted the role of the community in dealing with pandemics.

Dr. Midhun Sidharthan, Assistant Professor, Psychiatry, Govt. Medical College, Kozhikode, explained who and how can render effective psychological counselling so that a community can deal with the panics of pandemic and strains of lockdown.

Dr. K P Arvindan, Professor of Pathology (Rtd), Govt Medical College, Kozhikode and a prominent Science and Social Activist coordinated the elaborate and in-depth panel discussion.
